The SA20 is quickly gaining a strong foothold among local fans. The overall fan experience is obviously a bigger factor, but there’s one more reason.
Which one? The one-handed catch challenge.
The South African T20 league has brought this challenge to attract crowds to the stadiums and enjoy the cricketing action from up close. Apart from that, it also rewards lucky fans if they pull off a one-handed catch.
But there are some conditions in place to claim the catch and prize money.
So what’s the rule for the one-handed catch challenge in SA20?
As the name suggests, spectators in the stands need to complete the catch with one hand during the SA20 match. And it needs to be a clean attempt, with the ball not allowed to touch anything apart from the spectator’s palm.
That means you can’t claim a catch if the ball comes in contact with the hat, umbrella, or any other equipment. Plus, you can’t juggle the ball between your hands or can’t claim a catch that has come off your chest, shoulder, or other hand.
The ball must sit in the palm of your one hand for it to be eligible for the prize money.

How much is the prize money for the one-handed catch in SA20?
When the SA20 brought in the rule in the inaugural season in 2023, the title sponsor of the league, Betway, offered South African Rand (R) 1 million to the winners.
The next season, the prize money doubled to R2 million, which is also on offer in the third season. But spectators can triple their winnings if they do one thing.
If a fan with a Betway account plays the online Betway Catch Game and then takes a one-handed catch in the stands, they will stand a chance to triple their prize money.
Who was the first winner?
The second match of the inaugural season saw Steven Bloy emerge as the first-ever winner of the SA20 one-handed catch challenge. He caught the ball in the stands smashed by Joburg Super Kings Donovan Ferreira against Durban’s Super Giants.
Here’s the stunning catch:
The first two SA20 seasons combined witnessed 17 lucky fans fetch one-handed catches in the stadiums.
