How Are Players Selected for the IPL Auction?

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is incomplete without the player auction. The auction takes place three to four months before each season.

Sometimes it runs for two days, while sometimes it gets over within a few hours. But one thing remains constant – the intense bidding drama!

Teams go all out to acquire a player, increasing the bid one after another. It’s no less than a drama!

But have you ever wondered how players enter the IPL auction pool? And how does the player registration and selection process work?

Here we’ll go through the entire process behind a player’s selection in the IPL auction pool.

But first, who is eligible to register for the IPL auction?

Almost any player. The only thing is the player must be from an ICC-recognised nation (except Pakistan).

All Indian players must be registered with state cricket associations. And the overseas players must be registered with their respective national boards.

Every player must’ve also played at least one first-class or one List A match. This even applies to the Indian under-19 players.

The overseas players also need to secure a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their respective national boards. Without it, they can’t enter the auction.

Once a player meets the eligibility requirements, they are ready to register for the auction.

How to register for the IPL auction?

So the IPL Governing Council (IPL GC) opens the player registration window. They inform all state associations and national boards, who then pass the message to players.

The registration itself is simple. Interested players register for the auction through an online portal, but via their respective boards.

Each board then verifies the player’s details and eligibility. After verification, the board forwards the player’s name to the IPL GC.

What happens after the registration?

So, once the registration window closes, the IPL GC prepares a list of registered players. The council sends the list to all franchises.

The franchises go through the list. They filter out the players they want to bid on and submit their names to the IPL GC.

Then the IPL GC prepares the final auction shortlist. And the players in the shortlist become part of the auction pool. That’s how the players enter the IPL auction pool.

But how do franchises select players?

This is where scouting comes in. Most of the time, franchises scout players in domestic tournaments. Some franchises even conduct trial camps to identify talented cricketers.

If a player impresses scouts in a tournament or trial camp, the franchise may ask them to register for the auction. This is how the franchises identify the players they want to target in the auction.
