What is the Salary of IPL Umpires?

Star players. Packed stadiums. Close games. And big money. This is what the Indian Premier League (IPL) is known for.

Speaking of the monetary aspect, players often receive hefty deals in the IPL. Ask Rishabh Pant or Shreyas Iyer!

But the money isn’t just limited to the players. Umpires, too, receive a fair share for ensuring the smooth conduct of matches.

So, how much do the umpires make in the IPL?

The IPL has a salary structure in place for the umpires: on-field umpires, third & fourth umpires and development umpires.

Those who officiate the match on-field earn the highest salary per match. They receive INR 3 lakh per IPL match.

The third umpires, who often make crucial decisions sitting outside the boundary, take home INR 2 lakh per match. Even the fourth umpires, who assist with carrying equipment or drinks, earn INR 2 lakh per match.

The IPL even pays a decent salary of INR 60,000 to its development umpires, who are mostly Indians.

Since the IPL is the biggest T20 league in the world, the umpire salaries are at that level too. The salaries are, in fact, higher than what the ICC offers per T20I match.

For context, an ICC elite panel umpire’s match fee for a T20I game is USD 1,500 (approx. INR 1.40 lakh). So, the salary of an IPL umpire is more than double.

The hefty broadcast deals allow the BCCI to compensate the IPL umpires with handsome paychecks.

How much does an umpire earn in an IPL season?

Generally, an umpire officiates in 15 to 17 matches (on-field + third/fourth) per season. So that takes their earnings close to INR 50 lakh.

Plus, the umpires also receive other perks like daily allowance, travel allowance and accommodation allowance, which further increase their compensation.
