Everything You Need to Know About IPL 2025 Auction

With the retentions of all IPL franchises out, the excitement is building up for the 2025 mega auction. All 10 teams will engage in intense bidding wars to build their squads for the upcoming seasons.

A few teams have retained their core, some will be looking for potential captains, and teams like Punjab and Bengaluru are heading into the auction with a bigger purse.

On that note, here’s everything you need to know about the IPL 2025 auction, from dates to team purse.

When will the IPL 2025 auction take place?

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed the much-anticipated dates for the IPL 2025 auction. The mega event will span over two days, taking place on November 24 and 25, 2024.

It will, however, clash with the third and fourth days of India’s first Test against Australia at Perth.

What is the venue for the IPL 2025 auction?

For the second year in a row, the IPL auction will head to an overseas destination. Last year’s mini-auction took place in Dubai, but this time, Saudi Arabia will host the event.

Abady Al Johar Arena in Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah will deck up to host the IPL 2025 mega auction for two days.

How many players have registered for the IPL 2025 auction?

Before the registration deadline closed on November 4, a total of 1574 players put their names in the auction pool. Of those, 1165 are Indians, including 48 capped and 1172 uncapped players, while 409 are overseas, including 30 from associate members.

Here’s the breakdown of players by country:

Will all players go under the hammer?

No. Even though 1574 players have registered their names, not everyone will make it to the final auction list. The BCCI will take inputs from the franchises, after which it will trim down the list.

How much auction purse and RTMs are available for every team?

The IPL teams have retained a few players from their previous season’s squad, ranging from two to six before the mega auction. After the retentions, they are left with some amount they have at their disposal to spend in the auction. Plus, some teams have RTM options in their hand, which they can use during the auction.

Punjab Kings will enter the auction with the biggest purse of INR 110.5 crore, while Rajasthan Royals have the lowest at INR 41 crore.

Here’s the remaining purse and RTMs available for every team:

When teams can use RTM cards?

Teams can use RTM cards to buy back a player from their previous season’s squad. Should they want to use the RTM card for a player, they can do so once the bidding stops and get him back at that price.

But the franchise that raises the highest bid will have one chance to further increase the bid to their desired price. Then the franchise that wants to use the RTM will have to match the price to get back the player.

How many players a team can have in the squad?

There is a maximum limit of buying 25 players in the auction (including retentions and RTMs). Apart from that, a franchise can have a maximum of eight overseas cricketers among those 25. So a total of 204 empty slots are up for grabs in the auction after the 46 retentions.

Is there a minimum auction price?

Yes, the BCCI increased the minimum base price of players to INR 30 lakhs. So now players can set their minimum price at INR 30 lakhs.

Where to watch the IPL 2025 auction?

The IPL’s official broadcasters, Star Sports and JioCinema, will stream the 2025 mega auction on their respective platforms. Star Sports will broadcast the auction live on their TV channels, while JioCinema will live stream it on their app and website.
