What Happens if a Champions Trophy 2025 Match Ends in a Tie?

The Champions Trophy (CT) is making a return after a hiatus of almost eight years. It will be a 15-match event played in the 50-over format in February-March 2025.

Pakistan will host the tourney with a clear intention to retain the trophy won in the last edition played in 2017. Eight of the best teams will feature in the competition, which will result in some edge-of-the-seat thrillers.

And don’t rule out the possibility of a match getting tied. It will spice things up towards the end of a match, for sure.

But what will happen if a Champions Trophy 2025 match ends in a tie?

As has been the case since 2020 in all ICC Tournaments, a tied game goes into the Super Over. And this rule will also be in place for the Champions Trophy 2025.

So if a CT 2025 game results in a tie, the Super Over will determine the winner. The rule will be in force for all group-stage matches, along with the semis and the final.

Both teams will engage in a one-over tiebreaker to clinch the crucial points and maybe even the trophy if it happens in the final.

But how will the Super Over work?

It’s quite simple. The team that batted second will get to bat first in the one-over eliminator. They will have the option to select three batters who will bat in the Super Over, while the bowling side will pick a bowler.

Then the batting team will face the six balls and score as many runs as possible off them. Following that, the other team will have a go at the target set by the first team.

The one team that manages to score more runs will be the winner of the Super Over and, of course, the match. But the Super Over will end immediately if a batting side loses two wickets. They won’t get to finish their six balls if the dismissals happen in between.

Now what if the Super Over also ends in a tie?

It’s a bit rare for such a scenario to unfold in a match. But if at all the first Super Over ends in a tie, then subsequent Super Overs will follow.

And the Super Overs will keep happening until a winner emerges. But the subsequent Super Overs also need to take place within a certain time limit.

So how will the subsequent Super Overs work?

It will be the same as the initial tiebreaker but with some alterations. The batters who lost their wickets in the first Super Over won’t get to bat in the next consecutive over.

So the sides will need to rotate their batters. But if a batter was not out, retired hurt, or didn’t bat in the initial tiebreaker, they will have another go.

On the bowling front, though, the teams need to bring in another bowler, with the rules not allowing the same bowler to continue in back-to-back overs.

But what if the Super Overs also don’t produce a result?

Now there will be some exception conditions, which won’t let the Super Overs finish completely. If there’s any obstruction in the Super Over during a group stage match, then both teams will share a point each.

If this happens in semi-finals, then the team that topped the points table in the group stage will advance to the final. And if the Super Over ends with no result in the grand finale, then the two finalists will share the Champions Trophy.
