Not many teams have suffered as many heartbreaks as South Africa in ICC tournaments. They have had plenty of ‘so close, yet so far’ moments.
Take, for instance, the 1999 World Cup semi-final. The Proteas were in brilliant touch going into the semi-final. But everything came crashing down when they fell a run short to make the final. That’s how unlucky they have been in the ICC events.
So, have South Africa won any ICC tournament? The answer is yes! And here we’ll look at the ICC trophies won by South Africa.
ICC Trophies Won by South Africa
| Year | ICC Trophy |
|---|---|
| 1998 | Champions Trophy |
| 2025 | World Test Championship |
1998 Champions Trophy
Not many of you know that the Proteas have won an ICC white-ball tournament. And it was back in 1998 when they scripted history.
The ICC incorporated a new 50-over tournament that year – the Champions Trophy. And it brought some blessings for South Africa.
The Proteas made it through the quarter-final and semi-final to set up the final against the West Indies. They put the Windies to bat first.
The Caribbean side mustered 245. The target wasn’t big. So South Africa fancied their chance.
A collective batting effort saw the Proteas chase the 246-run target with three overs to spare. And they lifted their first ICC trophy.
2025 World Test Championship (WTC) Final
South Africa’s way to their second ICC title had many setbacks. All their disappointment, though, vanished in 2025.
Halfway through the 2023-25 WTC cycle, South Africa weren’t even favourites to lift the Test mace. But they beat all the odds.
The Proteas had won only one of their first five Tests. And then they secured seven consecutive victories to reach the WTC 2025 final.
But the battle was half done. Their biggest challenge, Australia, awaited in the final. And they conquered the defending champions in style.
South Africa were behind halfway through the match. But they bounced back to thrash a 282-run target with five wickets to spare.
