The IPL is one of the hardest cricket leagues to conquer for any team. And it’s down to the competitiveness between teams.
But one thing that can help teams make a huge difference is consistency. It plays a massive role in how a team’s campaign turns out.
Few franchises know this well, which has helped them become successful by winning the IPL several times.
Here, we’ll look at the top three most successful teams in IPL history.
3. Kolkata Knight Riders | 3 Titles
Seasons: 2012, 2014, 2024
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) weren’t as formidable as they are now. Despite some incredible players in their ranks, they underperformed in the first three IPL seasons.
But then Gautam Gambhir happened. He uplifted KKR from the shackles with his aggressive leadership.
The result? The Knight Riders made it to the playoffs five times in seven seasons. And not just that, they lifted the trophy twice in 2012 and 2014.
While KKR couldn’t maintain the run after Gambhir’s departure, Shreyas Iyer turned things around in 2024. It was an all-out effort from everyone to win the trophy for the third time.
2. Chennai Super Kings | 5 Titles
Seasons: 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, 2023
No other team has played in the IPL final as much as Chennai Super Kings (CSK). They have been to summit clashes 10 times!
That’s enough to show how consistent the Super Kings have been in the league. And the stable leadership of MS Dhoni has played a huge role in it.
The way he handles the situation on the ground with calm and confidence has helped CSK on many occasions. As a result, CSK have conquered the IPL five times.
Their first win came back in 2010, followed by another in 2011. Then CSK had a few close calls before they scripted a redemption story in 2018. Dhoni guided the team to two more victories in 2021 and 2023.
1. Mumbai Indians | 5 Titles
Seasons: 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020
The only other IPL team to win the tournament five times. Mumbai Indians’ (MI) initial journey was kind of similar to that of KKR.
They struggled in the first two seasons. But then they had a massive turnaround, making the playoffs nine times in 11 years.
It was in this period that MI tasted ultimate success five times. And one man was at the centre of everything.
Can you take a guess? Well, he’s none other than Rohit Sharma.
After a mid-way captaincy change in 2013, Sharma led MI with grace for the next decade. He added five titles to Mumbai’s trophy cabinet to make them one of the most successful teams in the IPL.
