Fastest Double Centuries in ODI Cricket

Fastest Double Centuries in ODI Cricket

There was a time when a run-a-ball century was considered quick enough. But now even that feels like a normal knock, as batters are completely rewriting how quickly the runs are scored these days.

With only a handful of balls to play, batters look to be creative and aggressive to score as many runs as possible with limited resources in ODIs.

So we see records like fastest fifty, century or even double century being rewritten quite often.

And this article will specifically go through the fastest double centuries recorded in ODI cricket.

5. Pathum Nissanka (Sri Lanka) | 136 Balls vs Afghanistan, 2024

No one in their wildest dream thought that Pathum Nissanka could become the first ODI double centurion for Sri Lanka. But he surprised everyone and how!

He first went past Sanath Jayasuriya’s 189, the previous highest score for Sri Lanka. And the icing on the cake was his double ton.

Nissanka took only 136 deliveries to reach the landmark, making it the fifth-fastest double century in ODIs.

4. Glenn Maxwell (Australia) | 128 Balls vs Afghanistan, 2023

This one is a once-in-a-generation knock. And no one is going to forget this MAD MAX show at all.

Things were not particularly easy for Maxwell. He had to earn every run in the hot and humid Mumbai weather, with Australia almost on the back foot.

But Maxwell brought Australia back by standing tall on a single leg (literally)! And that was possible largely because of his 128-ball double hundred. (Check out Maxwell’s T20I centuries here.)

3. Ishan Kishan (Bangladesh) | 126 Balls vs Bangladesh, 2022

Bangladesh generally don’t offer batting-friendly pitches. But this one for the 2022 Chattogram ODI was certainly an exception.

And Ishan Kishan didn’t complain at all. He converted his maiden ODI century into a double in just 126 balls, breaking the 2015 record set by Chris Gayle (138 balls).

2. Shubman Gill (India) | 117 Balls vs West Indies, 2026

Imagine an opponent has set a mammoth target of 406. You would perhaps crumble under pressure.

But Shubman Gill did not even flinch. He bossed that mighty run chase like a pro, suitable enough for a leader’s calibre.

First came up a 255-run opening stand with Rohit Sharma and then his double ton off only 117 balls, the second-fastest by any batter.

1. Harry Brook (England) | 114 Balls vs Sri Lanka, 2026

In less than a month of Gill’s breathtaking knock, we had another one from another captain. And he took three balls fewer than Gill!

Harry Brook was on full song against Sri Lanka on a flatter Rawalpindi deck. After a somewhat slow start, Brook stepped up like a true captain.

He had his hundred up in 75 balls. Not the fastest one you would have expected. But in the next 39 balls, he added another 100 runs like a breeze!

Unfortunately, Brook’s effort went in vain as Sri Lanka overhauled the 430-run target with a ball to spare.
