Test and ODI formats are somewhat similar to each other. At least in terms of how the game progresses.
While batters get time to settle in, they need to make the most of the limited balls available in ODIs, with no such restriction in Tests.
Despite that, batters have worked their way around in both formats and scored big knocks. But a few have managed to bring up double centuries in both formats.
Here we’ll look at the batters who have scored double centuries in Test and ODI cricket.
Sachin Tendulkar
How can you not think about this man while talking about cricket records? Sachin Tendulkar is everywhere!
The Master Blaster was the first to complete this double in international cricket. While he had four double hundreds in Tests, it was in 2010 when he breached the 200-run mark in ODIs. In fact, Tendulkar was the first men’s batter to reach the mark in ODIs.
2010 proved fruitful for the right-hander, as he added two more double tons in Tests. In all, Tendulkar brought up six double centuries in red-ball cricket.

In ODI: 200 not out against South Africa in Gwalior in 2010
Virender Sehwag
Virender Sehwag followed suit in 2011. The stylish opener had a penchant for hitting big scores.
And by big scores, we mean really big ones. His two triple hundreds stand as proof. He, in fact, has scored India’s highest individual score in Tests – 319 vs South Africa.
Sehwag scored four more 200-plus knocks to take his tally to six in the longer format. Then, in 2011, he brought up the double ton in ODIs.

Chris Gayle
Chris Gayle was no different from Sehwag. In fact, he was more ruthless and powerful.
Once he connected with the ball, it was all over for the bowler. While his T20 exploits are well known, he was equally a beast in Tests and ODIs.
Like Sehwag, Gayle also hammered two triple centuries in Tests. And before those 300s, he scored his maiden double ton in 2002.
Fast forward to 2015, and the Universe Boss cracked 200 in ODIs. Interestingly, it came in the World Cup, making it the first such instance in the 50-over event.

Rohit Sharma
If the above batters made double hundreds one after another in Tests, then Rohit Sharma did so in ODIs. Not once, not twice, but three times!
Sharma remains the only batter to cross the 200-run mark multiple times in ODIs. He never shied away from scoring big daddy double hundreds.
While the right-hander started slow, he made sure to finish with big knocks. Remember his 264-run assault against Sri Lanka? Well, it’s hard to forget the highest ODI score ever made.
And his only Test double ton came in 2019. He brought up 212-run knock against South Africa in the Ranchi Test.

Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill is the new man in attention. He has shown his adaptability to bat in Tests and ODIs, that too at different batting positions.
It was in Sharma’s presence Gill smashed a double hundred in ODIs. He aggregated 208 against New Zealand to start 2023 with a bang. Gill is the youngest to get to that mark in 50-over cricket.
Two and a half years later, the right-hander made it big in Tests. He scored a 269-run knock against England, this time as a captain.
