Gujarat Titans (GT) were the newcomers in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2022. Few would have thought a new team would have a chance to clinch the title right away.
But the Titans stunned everyone and went on to win the IPL trophy in their debut season. And then they followed it up with another final appearance in the next edition.
All this success wouldn’t have been possible without the best players at the helm of the team. And this article will list all the captains who have led Gujarat Titans in the IPL.
1. Hardik Pandya | 2022-2023
After Mumbai Indians (MI) didn’t retain Hardik Pandya ahead of IPL 2022, he moved to the debutants, Gujarat Titans (GT). The franchise pre-signed him for INR 15 crore. And he proved the worth of every penny.
Pandya led the Titans with elegance for two consecutive seasons. And it was down to the best set of players he had at his disposal, along with a calm coach in Ashish Nehra.
Under his leadership, the Ahmedabad-based franchise stormed into the finals twice and returned with the trophy in 2022. In all, he led the Titans in 31 matches and won 22, which translates to a win percentage of 70.96.
He was also at his best on the personal front. The all-rounder scored 833 runs and picked up 11 wickets in 31 matches across two seasons.
Despite the two good seasons, Pandya decided to move back to his first IPL franchise. MI offered him the captaincy, which he couldn’t say no to!
2. Shubman Gill | 2024-Present
After Pandya’s departure, GT were in search of a new captain. Rashid Khan was one option who led in Pandya’s absence on a couple of occasions. But they went with a young Indian batter.
It’s none other than Shubman Gill. The right-hander has been taking bigger strides in Indian cricket over the last few years.
And now the captaincy of GT is a feather in his cap. This will, of course, bolster his chances to lead India in the near future.
Speaking of his GT captaincy, Gill had a rough season. After two great seasons under Pandya, GT came crashing in 2024. The franchise finished eighth with five wins in 14 matches, though two games were washouts.
Gill is still a captain in the making. So there are bound to be ups and downs in the journey. But the franchise will back him as they build a strong team for future seasons.
