How many teams will play in the Cricket World Cup 2027?
14 teams will play in CWC 2027. South Africa and Zimbabwe qualified directly as co-hosts.
Eight more teams qualified through the ICC ODI rankings cut-off, while the remaining four places will qualify through the Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2027. (Check the qualification pathway for the Cricket World Cup 2027 here)
The team that finishes top in the Qualifier will directly enter the Group Stage of CWC 2027. And the other three teams will play the Super Series for the final Group Stage spot.
What is the Super Series in the Cricket World Cup 2027?
Think of it like a mini-qualifier before the main tournament. The second, third and fourth-placed teams from the CWC Qualifier will play in the Super Series.
These three teams will play each other once in a round-robin format. The team that finishes at the top of the Super Series table will move into the Group Stage. The winner will complete Group B.
How does the Group Stage work in the Cricket World Cup 2027? Are teams divided into groups?
Yes. After the Super Series, the 12 teams will be divided into two groups of six teams each.
Here are the groups for CWC 2027:
| Group A | Group B |
|---|---|
| India | New Zealand |
| Australia | South Africa |
| Pakistan | Sri Lanka |
| Afghanistan | England |
| Zimbabwe | Bangladesh |
| Qualifier A (CWC Qualifier Winner) | Qualifier B (Super Series Winner) |
Each team will play the other five teams in its group once. That means every team will play five Group Stage matches. A total of 30 matches will take place in the Group Stage.
The top three teams from each group, along with the seventh-best team from both groups, will proceed to the Super Seven stage.
What happens in the Super 7 in the Cricket World Cup 2027?
This is where the format gets interesting. It’s one more group stage before we head into the knockouts.
The seven qualified teams will face each other once in a single round-robin format. The top four teams will then qualify for the semi-finals after 21 matches in the Super 7 stage.
The ICC has also pre-seeded some teams in the Super 7 stage to make the fixture schedule easier to follow.
India are A1, Australia A2, Pakistan A3, England AB4, New Zealand B1, South Africa B2 and Sri Lanka B3. If another team qualifies instead of one of these sides, it takes that team’s assigned position.
What are the semi-final fixtures in the Cricket World Cup 2027?
The exact teams in the semi-finals will only be known after the Super 7 stage. But there is certainty about how the semi-finals are drawn.
So the Super 7 table-toppers will face the fourth-placed side in the first semi-final. The second semi-final will pit the second- and third-placed sides against each other.
The winner of the two semi-finals will then lock horns in the CWC 2027 final on November 21 in Johannesburg.
