All the IPL teams are gearing up for the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. And the IPL Governing Council has dropped freshly laid retention rules ahead of the IPL 2025 Auction.
So, let’s glance at the IPL 2025 Auction retention rules.
Player Retentions for IPL 2025
Every IPL franchise is allowed to retain a maximum of 6 players from their existing squad from the previous season. They also have the choice to retain their preferred 6 players through the combination of retention or the Right to Match (RTM) option.
The RTM card, which was last used in the 2017 auction, makes a return to the 2025 season. Teams will have the option to buy back a player from their existing squad at the end of the bidding in the auction.
The 6 retentions or RTMs can be made up of a maximum of 5 capped players (Indian and overseas) and 2 uncapped Indian players.
Now, the Indian players who haven’t featured in an international match or weren’t part of the BCCI’s central contract in the last 5 calendar years will come under the uncapped players category.
Player Retention Slabs for IPL 2025
All 5 capped retention slabs have been set to a fixed amount, which will get deducted from the respective team’s auction purse.
The first 3 capped retentions will cost INR 18 crore, INR 14 crore, and INR 11 crore, respectively. The fourth and fifth retentions will cost INR 18 crore and INR 14 crore. For the uncapped player retention, it will cost INR 4 crore each.
The retention amount will be deducted from each team’s auction purse according to the number of their retentions. If a team retains 5 capped players and 1 uncapped player, it will cost them INR 79 crore before the auction.
Total Auction Purse Available for IPL 2025
If a team doesn’t retain any players before the auction, they will have a full INR 120 crore to spend in the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. The auction purse has been increased by INR 20 crore from the previous season’s INR 100 crore.
The auction purse is part of the overall salary cap, which also consists of incremental performance pay and match fees. From the IPL 2025 onwards, every player part of the playing squad, including impact players, will earn a match fee of INR 7.5 lakh per match.
This means each franchise’s salary cap for IPL 2025 will be INR 146 crore. It will grow to INR 151 crore for IPL 2026 and INR 157 crore for IPL 2027.
