On May 7, 2025, Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket. He bowed out with 67 caps for India in the longer format.
Although it wasn’t a long Test career he would’ve loved to have, it had many memorable moments. Sharma started strong, but he struggled to make a mark.
Then, a promotion as opener in 2019 turned the tables. From then on till his retirement, Sharma emerged as India’s best Test opener, be it in home conditions or away games.
He tore apart the spin attack on turning tracks at home and was watchful in seaming conditions. While the right-hander couldn’t perform well towards the fag end of his career, he got some records to his name.
In this piece, we’ll list Rohit Sharma’s eight incredible records in Test cricket.
1. Century on Test Debut
While Rohit Sharma made his ODI and T20I debuts in 2007, he had to wait for six years to earn his Test debut. And when he received his maiden cap in 2013, he made sure to make it a memorable event.
On debut against the West Indies, Sharma walked in at No. 6. India were in a tricky situation. But Sharma’s 177 pulled the team outside the muddle.
As he brought up his maiden Test hundred, he became the 14th Indian batter to score a ton on Test debut. His score still remains the second-highest by an Indian on Test debut. Indeed, a debut to remember.
2. Centuries in First Two Test Innings
Fresh off the 177-run knock, Sharma carried the momentum into the next match. He scored an unbeaten 111 against the Windies.
With that, the Mumbai batter became the fifth player to score centuries in the first two Test innings.

3. Century in Each Innings of a Test Match
Sharma’s first two hundreds came in consecutive innings but in different matches. Fast forward to 2019, and he had two in one match!
Interestingly, he scored both tons in his first Test as an opener. No other opener had pulled off such a feat while opening the batting for the first time in red-ball cricket.
The right-hand opener accumulated 176 and 127 against South Africa in the 2019 Visakhapatnam Test.
4. Most Sixes in a Test Match
In the above match, Sharma scripted another record. He smashed the most sixes in a Test match.
His 176-run knock had six maximums, while the 127-run innings included seven. This aggregated to 13 sixes to go past Wasim Akram’s 1996 record of 12.

5. All Test Centuries in Wins
The Hitman hammered 12 centuries in his Test career. And whenever he scored a ton, India went on to win the Test match!
What’s fascinating is there are only two more batters apart from Sharma to have five or more Test tons, all coming in wins.
6. Most Consecutive Innings without a Single Digit Score
Sharma was at his finest between February 2021 and July 2023. In this period, he batted in 30 back-to-back innings without a score in single digits.
This is the longest a batter has batted without getting out or scoring between zero and 10. Sharma’s streak started against England in Chennai and ended against South Africa in Centurion.

7. Second-Most Sixes for India
Everyone knows how big of a hitter Sharma was. His six-hitting prowess was also visible in the whites for India.
The right-hander sent the ball over the ropes 88 times, the second-most for India in Tests. If not for the rough patch towards the end, he would’ve had over 100 sixes.
8. Fifth Indian Captain to win 10 Tests
In early 2024, Rohit Sharma became the fifth Indian captain to win 10 Test matches. He added two more wins in the 24 matches he captained India.
