List: Batters to Hit 5 Sixes in an Over in IPL

Sixes are an integral part of T20 cricket. There’s no passage of play where a batter misses to send the ball into the stands.

But hitting a bunch of sixes in a single over isn’t quite common yet. It’s a massive feat to pull off, which a few batters have attained in the IPL. They didn’t stop with a couple of big hits but rather smashed five in an over.

So, here are the batters who hit five sixes in an over in the IPL.

1. Chris Gayle (RCB) vs Rahul Sharma (Pune Warriors) | 2012

The first name shouldn’t surprise you at all. Chris Gayle was the master of six-hitting in the IPL.

He breathed life into an otherwise dull chase of 183 runs against Pune Warriors in 2012. And it was all thanks to Gayle’s five consecutive sixes that RCB would later win the game.

It was the 13th over of RCB’s innings, with the ball in Rahul Sharma’s hand. Saurabh Tiwary scrambled a single to let Gayle be back on the crease.

And then it was all madness at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Gayle smashed the ball over long-off, then to deep mid-wicket, and a straight six to complete the hat-trick.

He sent the fourth ball over long on and capped off the over with a six towards the deep square leg boundary. Although Gayle couldn’t stay till the end, the 31-run over changed the game’s momentum in RCB’s favour. He fell on a well-made 81 off 48 balls.

2. Rahul Tewatia (RR) vs Sheldon Cottrell (PBKS) | 2020

A good eight years later, we had the second entry on this list. It was Rahul Tewatia who staged a redemption for a lifetime against Punjab Kings in 2020.

With 51 needed off three overs, Rajasthan Royals (RR) badly wanted Tewatia to click. And boy, did he click!

After a sluggish 23-ball 17, he raced to 47 off 29 balls! Tewatia tore apart Sheldon Cottrell with five sixes in the 18th over.

The left-hander started with a six over the long leg boundary, then smashed the next one over the square. He continued the attack with sixes towards wide long off and midwicket.

Then came a bit of a respite for Cottrell as Tewatia failed to connect with the ball. But on the next, he deposited the ball over the midwicket boundary to complete five sixes.

If not for the dot ball on the fifth delivery, we might’ve seen six sixes on the trot. Nonetheless, Tewatia’s carnage helped RR ace the chase with three balls to spare.

3. Ravindra Jadeja (CSK) vs Harshal Patel (RCB) | 2021

The third instance didn’t take too long a time. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were on the verge of getting a below-par score against RCB.

But then Ravindra Jadeja’s bat swung into action. And it wouldn’t have come at a better time than the 20th over.

Harshal Patel perhaps didn’t see what’s gonna hit him after a well-controlled bowling display. He had figures of 3 for 14 until his last over started. But a 37-run over by Jadeja turned it to 3 for 51!

The left-hander smashed the first six between long-on and deep midwicket. He then tonked a full-length ball for another six.

The next ball was a bonus, as he clobbered the waist-high no ball for a six over deep midwicket. Jaddu sent the free hit once again to the deep midwicket.

Jadeja then ran two as a fielder dropped his catch. The lifeline gave him a chance to go in the record books, as he nailed a full toss over long on for his fifth six.

Jadeja nearly went for another six on the last ball, but it landed pretty inside to give him a four.

4. Rinku Singh (KKR) vs Yash Dayal (GT) | 2023

Your team needs 28 runs off five balls. Now you have two options – either go for five sixes or four sixes and a four.

You’d perhaps go with the first option. And so did Rinku Singh versus Gujarat Titans in 2023.

The pocket dynamo pulled an impossible win for Kolkata Knight Riders with five successive maximums. After Umesh Yadav gave him the strike, Rinku held his nerve till KKR sailed through.

He deposited the second ball towards the wide long-off before the third sailed over deep backward square leg. Rinku made it three in a row with another six over long-off. Then he went over the long-on boundary twice to take KKR home.

5. Riyan Parag (RR) vs Moeen Ali (KKR) | 2025

Riyan Parag had tweeted he would hit four sixes in an over in IPL 2023, which didn’t come off that year.

Fast forward to 2025, and he nailed not four but five. And he didn’t stop there. He clubbed six maximums on the six consecutive balls he faced, albeit across two overs!

Moeen Ali, who had a good game till the 12th over, faced the heat. Parag lit up the 13th over with back-to-back sixes over square leg, long on, square leg, long on, and finally long off.

He was back on strike on the second ball of the 14th over. And Paarag reverse-swept his way into the ‘six-ball, six-sixes’ exclusive club.

His carnage, though, wasn’t enough as RR faltered in the chase by a run against KKR.
