On May 12, 2025, Virat Kohli bowed out of Test cricket. This marks the end of an excellent career that saw the rise of a great batter and, of course, a leader.
Kohli’s Test career wasn’t smooth all along, with many highs and lows. But there was hardly anyone better than Kohli in his peaks.
While he couldn’t get the 10000-run mark, he collected many other milestones on the way.
As the legend bids adieu, here are some of Virat Kohli’s incredible records in Test cricket.
1. Fourth Indian to 9000 Runs and 30 Centuries in Tests
Kohli may not have finished with 10000 Test runs, but he is among the four Indians to score 9000 runs and 30 centuries in the format. He sits alongside Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, and Sunil Gavaskar.
Kohli needed 197 innings to attain 9000 runs, which is also the fourth-fastest among Indians. His 30th Test century came in his last series played in Australia.
2. Fourth-Fastest Indian to 5000 Test Runs
Kohli was at his peak from late 2014 to 2019. That’s when he clinched many records.
In 2017, Kohli raced to 5000 runs in 105 innings, the fourth-fastest among Indians in this format.
3. Second-Fastest Indian to 6000 Test Runs
In 2018, the right-hander reached 6000 Test runs for India. He took two more innings than Sunil Gavaskar (117) to become the second-quickest Indian.
4. Third-Fastest Indian to 7000 Test Runs
Fast forward to 2019, and Kohli touched the 7000-run landmark. He went from 6000 to 7000 in 19 innings! He trails Virender Sehwag (134) and Tendulkar (136) to be the third-fastest Indian to the mark.
5. Most Successful Indian Test Captain
It’s quite hard to forget India’s dominance under Kohli’s leadership. He had a formidable team at his disposal, which made him the most successful Indian Test skipper.
The Men in Blue won 40 matches out of 68 under Kohli’s aggressive charge. This translates to a 58.82 win percentage to sit at the top.

6. Most Runs as Indian Test Captain
While Kohli’s captaincy took India to new heights, it also propelled his personal performance. And his numbers as captain are surreal.
The Delhi batter netted 5864 runs across 133 innings (68 matches) under his captaincy tenure. He averaged an impressive 54.80.
7. Most Centuries as Indian Test Captain
His tally also included 20 Test centuries. This is the most centuries by a captain for India in Tests. Only Gavaskar scored more than 10 hundreds as India’s skipper.
8. Most Test Double Centuries for India
Kohli converted seven of his 30 tons into double hundreds. These are the most as an Indian batter in Tests.
Interestingly, all of his double centuries came as captain, which is again the most for India.
9. Highest Test Score by an Indian Captain
When Kohli brought up his seventh and last double century, he created a record. He amassed 254 not out against South Africa in the 2019 Pune Test.
This is the highest individual score as India’s captain in Tests. He went past his previous record of 243 versus Sri Lanka.
10. First Indian and Asian Skipper to win a Test Series in Australia
Winning a Test series in Australian territory isn’t an easy job. But Kohli’s men challenged the Australians in their backyard.
He guided India to their first Test series win Down Under in 2018-19. India lifted the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) by 2-1.
