ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 Format | Explained

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is all set to host the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 in October 2024. The competition will run from October 3 to 20 across 2 venues in Dubai and Sharjah.

It’s the 9th edition of the biennial event, which will see 10 teams in action. The 10 teams are split into 2 groups, with the top 2 from each group entering the semi-finals.

So which 10 teams are participating in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024?

Even though the UAE are hosting the tournament, their women’s team won’t feature in it as they weren’t the initial hosts nor did they qualify for the main event.

The following teams will feature in the 9th edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup this year:

  • Australia
  • Bangladesh
  • England
  • India
  • New Zealand
  • Pakistan
  • Scotland
  • South Africa
  • Sri Lanka
  • West Indies

How did teams qualify for the tournament?

Bangladesh qualified for the event as host before the UAE replaced them as the tournament venue.

6 teams gained automatic qualification based on their performance in the previous edition. Australia, England, India, and South Africa were the 4 semi-finalists of the 2023 edition, while New Zealand and the West Indies finished as No. 3 in their respective groups.

Pakistan made it to the tournament directly, thanks to them being the highest-ranked team in the ICC team rankings at the end of February 2023.

The remaining 2 spots were filled through the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 Qualifier held earlier in the year in Abu Dhabi. Sri Lanka and Scotland booked their tickets by entering the final of the qualifier, which Sri Lanka won by 68 runs.

Interestingly, this is going to be Scotland’s maiden appearance at the Women’s T20 World Cup.

How do the groups look?

The 10 teams are split into 2 groups of 5 each.

Group A sees 3 Asian neighbours — India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka — and the trans-Tasman rivals — Australia and New Zealand — put against each other.

Group B features 2 Women’s T20 World Cup winners — England and the West Indies — along with South Africa, Bangladesh, and debutant Scotland.

What is the format of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024?

The format is simple. During the group stage, teams will take on the other opponents of their respective groups in a single round-robin format.

Each team will play 4 matches in the group stage, which runs from October 3 to 15. After the conclusion of the group stage, the top 2 teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals.

The No. 1 team in Group A will take on the No. 2 team in Group B in one semi-final, while the No. 1 team in Group B will be up against the No. 2 team in Group A in another.

The winners of the 2 semi-finals will then meet in the summit clash on October 20 in Dubai.
