5 Brother Duos Who Played in IPL

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is not just a tournament; it’s a huge festival for cricket lovers around the world! Nowadays, the IPL has become the central hub for cricketing talent.

Over the years, IPL has brought various siblings onto the field. But there is an extra level of feeling involved because they’re family.

In the history of the IPL, many brother duos have played in the league either together in a team or against each other. These duos have left their indelible mark on the competition.

In this article, let’s have a look at 5 such brother duos who played in the IPL.

1. Pathan Brothers

Irfan Pathan and Yusuf Pathan were the first pair of siblings to play in the IPL. Both were known for their all-round performances.

In the overall IPL, Irfan scored 1139 runs and took 80 wickets in just 103 matches, whereas Yusuf scored 3204 runs and took 42 wickets in 174 matches.

Irfan debuted his career with the Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in 2008 and played another 2 seasons for them. Later on, he played for Delhi Daredevils (DD), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS), and retired with Gujarat Lions (GL) in 2017.

On the other hand, Yusuf started with the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in 2008. In that year, RR won the IPL final against CSK, and Yusuf Pathan was rewarded as the Player of the Match for his excellent performance.

He continued with RR for the next 2 seasons. After that, Yusuf became part of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for 7 years. Later, he played for Sunrisers Hyderabad and retired in 2019.

2. Pandya Brothers

Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya became the first duo to play for the same team in the IPL.

Hardik was first bought by Mumbai Indians (MI) at a base price of INR 10 lakh in 2015. He played with MI for another 6 seasons. Then, he was bought by the Gujarat Titans (GT) in 2022, and in the same year, GT won the IPL final under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy.

On the other side, MI bought Krunal for INR 2 crore, and Krunal played for them from 2016 to 2021. After that, just like Hardik, he also joined the newly formed Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in 2022.

3. McCullum Brothers

Brendon McCullum and Nathan McCullum are the two brothers from New Zealand who participated in the IPL. Brendon was an opening batsman who scored 2880 runs in 109 matches, however, Nathan didn’t do well and played only 2 matches.

In 2008, Brendon McCullum played for the Kolkata Knight Riders. In the opening match of the 2008 season, KKR won against RCB thanks to his 158* runs in just 73 balls. Later, he played for Kochi Tuskers Kerala (KTK), then again for KKR, CSK, and GT, and played the last season for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2018.

On the other hand, Nathan McCullum had a short stay in the IPL. He played only one season for the Pune Warriors in 2011.

4. Chahar Brothers

Deepak Chahar and Rahul Chahar, both brothers, are talented bowlers. Rahul bowls right-arm leg break, whereas Deepak is a pacer.

Deepak began his career with RR in 2011 and then played for the Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) in 2016. And since 2018, he has been a part of the Chennai Super Kings.

Rahul also started with RPS in 2017. Then he played for the Mumbai Indians from 2018 to 2021. Since 2022, he has been playing for the Punjab Kings (PBKS).

5. Curran Brothers

Tom Curran and Sam Curran are both English cricketers. The Curran brothers are pace-bowling all-rounders.

Tom Curran started his IPL career with the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018. Apart from KKR, he played for the Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals.

Sam Curran began with the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in 2019, then he played with CSK for two years. Sam was again bought by PBKS in 2023.
