Delivering a match-defining knock or a spell generally leads to a Player of the Match (POTM) award.
Now winning POTM award in consecutive games isn’t easy. One needs to be super consistent.
A players, though, have done the unthinkable, making a hat-trick of POTM awards in the IPL. Here’s a look at each of those players.
1. Jacques Kallis | Royal Challengers Bangalore (2010)
Former South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis was the first to win three consecutive POTM awards in the 2010 IPL.
First of those came against Kings XI Punjab. He drew the first blood with the ball (1/39), breaking a crucial partnership. And then scored an unbeaten 89 to help RCB chase down 204 runs with ease.
A couple of days later, Kallis displayed his all-round skills again, this time against Rajasthan Royals (RR). His 2 for 20 restricted RR to 92 and then closed out the chase with an unbeaten 44.
The hat-trick came against Mumbai Indians (MI) for yet another match-winning all-round performance. His 1 for 35 and an unbeaten 66 helped secure a seven-wicket win over MI.
2. Virender Sehwag | Delhi Daredevils (2012)
A couple of years later, Virender Sehwag replicated Kallis’ feat. The first of his POTM came against Pune Warriors. His unbeaten 87 helped Delhi ace a 147-run chase.
He followed it up with a 73-run knock against MI, helping Delhi post a match-winning 207 for 5. Sehwag completed the streak against RR with a decisive 63 off 39 balls. This knock was the point of difference in Delhi’s one-run win.
3. Aaron Finch | Gujarat Lions (2016)
Aaron Finch switched IPL teams quite often but still managed to bag a rare record. He had an incredible run with the bat for Gujarat Lions in 2016.
That run started with a 47-ball 74 in a successful chase of 162 runs against Punjab. Then came another fifty in a chase of 164 runs against Rising Pune Supergiants. And Finch wrapped up with an unbeaten 67 in another successful chase of 144 against MI.
4. Virat Kohli | Royal Challengers Bangalore (2016)
Finch wasn’t the only one with a hat-trick of POTM awards in IPL 2016. Virat Kohli too joined him.
Kohli was in red-hot form that season, winning five POTM awards. Three of those came in a row, with the first coming against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for an unbeaten 75 in an 184-run chase.
Kohli breached the three-digit figures against Punjab, scoring 113 off 50 balls. He followed it up with an unbeaten 54 in a low-scoring game against Delhi.
5. Jos Buttler | Rajasthan Royals (2018)
Scoring one 80-plus knock takes a lot of effort. Jos Buttler scored not one but three in consecutive games to bag the POTM awards.
The first of those knocks, 82 off 58, carried RR’s innings against Punjab. Buttler went a notch above against CSK, smashing an unbeaten 95 to close out a 177-run chase.
He had an almost identical knock against MI, scoring an unbeaten 94 to chase down 169 runs.
6. Ruturaj Gaikwad | Chennai Super Kings (2020)
Ruturaj Gaikwad was a major positive in CSK’s otherwise disappointing 2020 season. He closed out the campaign with three consecutive fifties.
An unbeaten 65, his maiden IPL fifty, helped chase 146 against RCB on a sluggish Dubai pitch. Then a 72-run knock guided CSK to a 173-run chase against KKR. Gaikwad ended the season with another fifty, 62*, in a chase of 154 against Punjab.
7. Sameer Rizvi | Delhi Capitals (2025-2026)
Sameer Rizvi is the latest entrant to join this elite list. And what’s special is he won two of the POTM awards while playing as an impact player! That’s enough to tell you how impactful he was.
Rizvi’s maiden IPL POTM award came in 2025, scoring quick-fire 58* against Punjab Kings in a 207-run chase.
He started 2026 season from where he left off in 2025. Rizvi walked in at crucial point and scored an unbeaten 70 to close out a 142-run chase against Lucknow Super Giants.
He made the hat-trick with a glorious 90-run knock against MI to help DC chase 163 runs.
