4 Fascinating Records Held by Virat Kohli in IPL

In 2008, a young, promising talent from Delhi came into the limelight for his aggressive batting approach and leadership capabilities. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) saw the potential and snapped the Delhi batter in the 2008 IPL auction.

This is Virat Kohli for you. He repaid the faith by staying loyal to the franchise and scoring truckloads of runs in the IPL.

In his illustrious IPL career, King Kohli has displayed his batting mastery, racking up many records to his name.

On that note, let’s glance at the major records Virat Kohli holds in the IPL.

Only Player to Play for a Single IPL Team from 2008

Virat Kohli holds this unique record of representing only a single IPL team since the inaugural season in 2008 to date.

The right-hander made his IPL debut with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2008 and has stuck with them through thick and thin.

This also means that Kohli has played the most matches for a single IPL team, with close to 250 appearances for RCB.

Most Runs in IPL History

It’s no surprise that Virat Kohli is the leading run-scorer in the IPL’s history, with over 7700 runs under his belt.

At the start of his IPL career, he took some time to get in the groove, with decent outings in the first 2 seasons. In the 2010 season, Kohli accumulated 307 runs at a strike rate of 144.

Since then, he has never looked back and has scored 300+ runs in each season, showcasing his consistency with the bat.

Most Runs in a Single IPL Season

One of those seasons was remarkable for the Run Machine, as he broke past Chris Gayle’s record for scoring the most runs in a single IPL edition.

Kohli was in his purple patch in the 2016 season. He amassed a whopping 973 runs at an incredible average of 81.08 and a healthy strike rate of 152.03 in 16 innings.

Before him, no batter had breached the mark of 800 runs in a single IPL season. And it’s highly unlikely any batter will go past Kohli’s landmark.

For that rollicking effort with the bat, Kohli bagged the coveted Orange Cap for the first time!

Most Centuries in a Single IPL Season

The 2016 season was even more special as Kohli brought up his maiden IPL hundred. But he didn’t stop with one and went on to add three more centuries in the same season.

With that, the RCB captain set a record for hammering the most centuries in a single IPL season. Later, in 2022, Jos Buttler levelled the record by scoring 4 hundreds.

Of the 4 tons, Kohli scored 2 against the Gujarat Lions (100* and 109) and 1 each against the Rising Pune Supergiants (108*) and the Kings XI Punjab (113).
