What is the Salary of BCCI Umpires and Match Referees?

Indian cricket is a money-making machine. And at the centre of it sits the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India), the richest cricket board in the world.

From billion-dollar media rights deals to team sponsorships, the board generates massive earnings every year. And we can’t discount the IPL revenue, can we?

Now this huge money doesn’t just sit in the BCCI coffers. The board offers hefty central contracts and match fees to its international cricketers. After all, these guys and their performances bring the money to the table.

But players aren’t the only ones earning from Indian cricket.

There’s another set of people who ensure every domestic match runs without any hiccup.

And who are they? The BCCI umpires and match referees.

While they may not grab headlines like players, they play a huge role in conducting domestic matches in India.

But have you ever wondered how much the BCCI pays them? Here’s a breakdown!

BCCI Umpire Salary

You see, the BCCI has divided its domestic umpires into four different categories: A+, A, B and C.

And those in the higher categories receive better pay packages.

The BCCI pays A+ and A category umpires INR 40,000 per day for officiating in first-class tournaments, like the Ranji Trophy and List A tournaments, like the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

But what about T20 matches?

Well, for domestic T20 competition, like the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the board pays INR 20,000 per day to umpires in the A+ and A categories.

Now, coming to the B and C category umpires.

These umpires earn INR 30,000 per day in first-class and List A competitions. And for domestic T20 games, they receive INR 15,000 per day.

These match fees are, obviously, less than what an umpire makes in an IPL game. An umpire’s IPL match fee ranges between INR 2 lakh to 3 lakh.

BCCI Match Referee Salary

While umpires control the action on the field, match referees make sure everything around the match runs smoothly.

They oversee player conduct, ensure playing conditions are in place and handle disciplinary matters during matches. (Read more about a cricket match referee’s role here.)

Unlike umpires, the pay structure for match referees remains the same across tournaments.

The board pays INR 30,000 per day to match referees for first-class and List A competitions. And for domestic T20 games, they receive INR 15,000 per day.
