1987 ODI World Cup

The ODI World Cup went outside England for the first time in 1987, with India and Pakistan co-hosting the tourney. And it brought good luck to Australia.

They took on arch-rival England in the final at the Eden Gardens. Australia’s captain, Allan Border, won the toss and elected to bat first.

Australia posted a challenging total of 253/5 in 50 overs, with everyone from the top order chipping in crucial runs. England came close to winning the match, but Australian bowlers had the final say, restricting them to 246/8 and winning their first ICC trophy.

1999 ODI World Cup

From 1999 to 2009, the world saw Australia rule over ICC trophies like a boss. It started with their second ODI World Cup title in 1999.

Australia faced off against Pakistan in a low-scoring, one-sided affair in the summit clash. Australia’s bowling attack, led by Shane Warne, wrapped up Pakistan for 132 runs.

In response, the Kangaroos chased down the total with 8 wickets and 179 balls to spare.

2003 ODI World Cup

Australia made it to their successive ODI World Cup final in 2003 and crushed India to claim their third triumph.

After being asked to bat first, Australia posted a formidable total of 359/2 riding on the back of their captain Ricky Ponting’s unbeaten 140. Damien Martyn (88*) and Adam Gilchrist (57) also played important knocks.

India started the chase by losing an early wicket, though Virender Sehwag showed resistance. But Australia’s bowling attack wrapped up India for 234 runs.

2006 Champions Trophy

After the ODI World Cup wins, the Aussies turned their attention towards the Champions Trophy, a mini-World Cup.

They cruised to the final of the 2006 Champions Trophy held in India. The Australian men were up against the West Indies.

The West Indies elected to bat first, but the decision didn’t go well as Australia bundled them out for 138 runs. It was an easy chase for Australia to clinch their first Champions Trophy.

2007 ODI World Cup

Australia achieved the hat-trick of winning the ODI World Cup in 2007. They met Sri Lanka in the rain-interrupted summit clash.

In a truncated match, Adam Gilchrist slammed 149 off 104 balls, which is the highest individual score in a World Cup final. His assault powered Australia to 281/4 in 38 overs.

Rain returned in Sri Lanka’s chase, changing their target to 269 runs in 36 overs. But they fell short of 53 runs, and Australia won their third ODI World Cup title on the trot.

2009 Champions Trophy

Australia entered their consecutive final of the Champions Trophy in 2009. They faced off against trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand in the final.

The Aussies restricted New Zealand to 200/9 in 50 overs to set up another easy chase. They thrashed the target with 6 wickets to spare, with Shane Watson (105*) leading the charge.

2015 ODI World Cup

Australia laid their hands on the ODI World Cup for the fifth time, and this time on their home soil. They met New Zealand in another final once again and crushed them to a paltry score of 183.

Australia lost an early wicket, but they didn’t face major hiccups to chase down the target with 7 wickets to spare. They went into jubilant mode at the MCG in front of their home crowd.

2021 T20 World Cup

Australia had won both 50-over tournaments several times, but the T20 World Cup eluded them for quite some time. But the Aussies ended the long wait in 2021.

Australia took on New Zealand in the 2021 T20 World Cup final held in Dubai. New Zealand batted first and posted a challenging total of 172 runs, with captain Kane Williamson (85) stepping up in the crucial clash.

New Zealand’s bowlers didn’t pose any threat on the flat pitch as Australia cruised towards the target with 8 wickets in hand.

2023 World Test Championship

2023 was a remarkable year for Australia as they won 2 ICC trophies, starting with the WTC final in June.

Australia made it to their first WTC final, and they were up against India. They outbatted and outbowled India over the 5 days and claimed the WTC Mace.

2023 ODI World Cup

Australia took on India yet again in 5 months, this time in the ODI World Cup in India’s backyard. Australia won the toss and asked India to bat first.

India got off to a good start, but captain Rohit Sharma’s wicket derailed the team from the track. The Australian bowlers then didn’t give an inch to make a comeback and restricted India to 240.

While defending the target, India did try to spoil the party, with 3 early wickets. But Travis Head’s 137 and Marnus Labuschagne’s composed, unbeaten 58 handed Australia their sixth World Cup title.
