When T20 cricket started in the early 2000s, few would’ve thought the format would make this big. It has almost overshadowed the other two formats – Tests and ODIs.
While there’s constant T20 action around the year, Indian players have a limited presence. You will find them playing either in the Indian Premier League (IPL) or the domestic Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT).
But despite the limited games, a few Indian players have featured in over 400 T20 matches. This wouldn’t have been possible without a solid consistency throughout their careers.
So, here we’ll list the Indian players who have played 400 T20 matches.
1. Rohit Sharma
In October 2022, Rohit Sharma became the first-ever Indian player to play 400 T20 matches. The former Indian T20I captain has been among the few Indian players who have attained the tag of T20 legends.
While Sharma retired from the T20I format in 2024, he continues to ply his trade in the IPL. Interestingly, during IPL 2025, he also became the first player from India to play in 450 games in the T20 format.
Sharma made his T20 debut for Mumbai against Baroda in the 2007 SMAT. And in his second game, he blasted an unbeaten 101 at a strike rate of 224.44 against Gujarat. That was some start to his T20 career!
In all, the right-hand opener has scored over 12000 at a decent strike rate of around 135. You won’t believe it, but he even has a hat-trick to his name in the IPL!

2. Dinesh Karthik
While Dinesh Karthik couldn’t quite establish himself on the international circuit, he has been a stalwart in domestic cricket. And it’s visible from his T20 career stats.
Karthik turned up for India, Tamil Nadu in SMAT, and six franchises in the IPL. He even became the first Indian to make an appearance in South Africa’s SA20 earlier in 2025.
Karthik’s T20 debut came in 2006, when he received his maiden cap for India in a T20I match against South Africa. Fast forward to 2024, he featured in his 400th T20 match while playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
Karthik’s T20I stats read 686 runs in 48 innings, with a solitary fifty. Overall, he has amassed over 7500 runs, alongside 236 catches and 72 stumpings.

3. Virat Kohli
On March 22, 2025, the IPL turned 18. It was a special moment for everyone involved in the league, more so for Virat Kohli, who has featured in each of the league’s seasons.
On the same day, Kohli turned up in his 400th T20 match. There wouldn’t have been a better day than this to achieve such a massive feat.
He played his first T20 game in SMAT 2007 for Delhi versus Himachal Pradesh. Within a few years, he went on to play for India and RCB.
Kohli has been the backbone for RCB all through these years, and so was he for India. He finished with 4188 runs in international T20s, including a hundred and 38 fifties.
In all T20s, Kohli has accumulated over 13000 runs, the first Indian to score that many runs, with more than 100 fifty-plus scores.

4. MS Dhoni
MS Dhoni became the latest entrant to this exclusive 400 T20s club. As MSD stepped on the field for Chennai Super Kings on April 25, 2025, he became only the fourth Indian to attain this milestone.
Dhoni doesn’t need any special introduction. Everyone is perhaps aware of his finishing skills, wicketkeeping, and, of course, leading teams.
There are not many clever leaders like Dhoni in cricket. And it kind of reflects from his trophy-hunting habit.
MSD’s T20 debut came in 2006 for India versus South Africa. In a few months, he went on to lead India to the T20 World Cup triumph. And since 2008, he has been the mainstay of CSK in the IPL.
