Top 5: Batters with Most Runs in a Single IPL Season

The IPL is a one-stop destination to see all the top batters in action. So there’s a competition among all to top the run charts every season.

While it may all seem easy, they need to negotiate world-class bowlers and varied conditions. Plus, they need to maintain their form to churn out runs for fun.

Some of the batters did all this with finesse to pile up a bulk of the runs in a season.

Here, in this article, we’ll list the batters who scored the most runs in a single IPL season.

5. Virat Kohli (RCB): 741 Runs in 2024

Virat Kohli is perhaps the most consistent batter in the IPL. Not many have enjoyed batting in the league like him.

Once Kohli is in his zone, it’s quite hard to stop him. And he was almost an unstoppable force in 2024.

Kohli scored his eighth IPL hundred and helped RCB make a turnaround. He added 741 runs to his massive tally and clinched the Orange Cap for the second time.

4. David Warner (SRH): 848 Runs in 2016

The IPL is incomplete without David Warner. Like Kohli, Warner has maintained consistency in all those years.

But it was in 2016 when the left-hander was at his absolute best – both as a captain and a batter. Speaking of his batting adventure, Warner emerged as Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) top run-scorer.

He batted like a true leader to accrue 848 runs, including nine fifties, in 17 matches. While he fell short of the Orange Cap, winning the IPL trophy made up for it.

3. Jos Buttler (RR): 863 Runs in 2022

Jos Buttler was in sublime touch in IPL 2022. As a result, he topped the batting charts to win the Orange Cap.

Buttler started the season with a bang. In his second match, he brought up a hundred against Mumbai Indians. And he went on to add three more centuries to his tally to go level with Kohli’s 2016 record.

The four centuries swelled his run count to 863 across 17 innings. His consistency helped Rajasthan Royals enter the final for the first time after 2008.

2. Shubman Gill (GT): 890 Runs in 2023

Shubman Gill enjoyed a stellar run in 2023. And it wasn’t limited to international cricket, as he carried the form in the IPL.

After decent outings till 2022, Gill delivered big in 2023. He was Gujarat Titans’ (GT) ace batter, often providing the brisk starts.

And his form peaked in the second half of the season. Gill brought up three hundreds within four games to take his tally to 890 runs.

The right-hand batter had an average of 59.33 and a strike rate of 158.80 in 17 matches.

1. Virat Kohli (RCB): 973 Runs in 2016

It’s no surprise to see Kohli again. He almost aggregated 1000 runs in the 2016 season to show why everyone calls him the ‘Run Machine.’

The right-hand batter was at the peak of his career at that time. And all of us saw him dominate almost every bowling attack.

Except for a few innings, Kohli barely failed to put up runs. He went past 50 runs in 11 of the 16 innings and converted four half-centuries into centuries.

All this combined gave him 973 runs, which are the most in an IPL season. In addition, Kohli averaged 81.08 and struck at a good rate of 152.03. (Read some of Kohli’s records here.)
