List of ICC Trophies Won by India

In 1983, when no one expected it, India surprised the world by winning the ODI World Cup. At that time, India were the underdog in world cricket.

But since the turn of the 21st century, India have been one of the most consistent teams in ICC tournaments. As a result, the Men in Blue have made it to the final several times and have also tasted considerable success in prestigious ICC tournaments.

Here we’ll glance at the list of ICC trophies won by India over the years.

1983 ODI World Cup

Led by Kapil Dev, the Indian men stunned everyone by defeating the mighty West Indies in the 1983 World Cup final.

The West Indies had won the previous 2 editions and were on their way to add another trophy. But India’s bowlers stopped their juggernaut by wrapping up the Caribbean team for 140 runs while defending the 183-run target.

The Indian cricket team scripted history at the home of cricket, Lord’s, and revolutionised Indian cricket.

2002 Champions Trophy

India had to wait 19 years to win their second ICC title, but it came in an unusual way. The Men in Blue had to share the 2002 Champions Trophy with Sri Lanka as rain played spoilsport in the final.

The final was scheduled for September 29, when Sri Lanka elected to bat first and scored 244/5. But when India’s turn came to bat, rain stopped the play, and the match was pushed to reserve day.

On the reserve day as well, the same thing was repeated, resulting in both teams being adjudged joint winners.

2007 T20 World Cup

India had a terrible campaign in the 2007 ODI World Cup a few months ago in the Caribbean. So fans had fewer expectations as an inexperienced team participated in the inaugural T20 World Cup.

But the Indian team marched into the final, squaring off against arch-rivals Pakistan. Batting first, India put up a challenging total of 157, with Gautam Gambhir (75 off 54) being the top scorer.

Pakistan were cruising to victory, but Misbah-ul-Haq’s miscalculated shot caught by S. Sreesanth handed India their first T20 World Cup triumph.

2011 ODI World Cup

India co-hosted the 2011 World Cup along with Sri Lanka, and both co-hosts squared off in the summit clash. Batting first, Sri Lanka mustered 274 runs, thanks to Mahela Jayawardene’s unbeaten 103-run knock.

In response, India had a shaking start, losing Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar in the first powerplay. Then Gautam Gambhir forged crucial stands with Virat Kohli and captain MS Dhoni to take India closer to the target.

Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium witnessed history being scripted as Dhoni smashed the winning six over long-on. The Men in Blue fulfilled the dreams of Tendulkar and the whole nation.

2013 Champions Trophy

The 50-over Champions Trophy final in 2013 turned into a 20-overs-per-side affair due to a rain interruption.

Hosts England elected to bowl and restricted India to a moderate 129 runs in 20 overs. Virat Kohli (43), Shikhar Dhawan (31), and Ravindra Jadeja (33) were the only batters to score in double digits for India.

While chasing the 130-run target, England couldn’t get the desired start, losing 4 wickets for 46 runs. However, Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara built a crucial partnership to steady England’s ship.

But once both returned to the pavilion, India gained back control and restricted England to 124 runs to win their second Champions Trophy.

2024 T20 World Cup

After the Champions Trophy win, India came close to winning a few ICC trophies but fell short in the final in the next 10 years.

The Men in Blue were in desperate search of winning their next ICC title. And destiny took them to the USA and the Caribbean islands.

India made their way into the final without losing a single match and defeated South Africa in the summit clash to clinch their second T20 World Cup title.
