Why Punjab Kings Failed to Make IPL 2026 Playoffs?

Just when it looked like IPL 2026 was finally going to be Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) year, the wheels came off in spectacular fashion.

Let’s be honest. The first half of the tournament was an absolute dream. Shreyas Iyer and his boys were flying high. They almost looked like an unstoppable machine.

PBKS started the season like a house on fire, remaining unbeaten in their first seven matches. They even pulled off a miracle by chasing down the highest-ever total in IPL history against Delhi Capitals.

Six consecutive wins put them comfortably at the top of the points table. And a playoffs spot looked like a mere formality.

But then came the twist. A painful defeat against Rajasthan Royals completely broke their spirit.

What followed was a complete meltdown. Punjab went from being table-toppers to losing six matches in a row!

Even a victory in their final league match against Lucknow Super Giants wasn’t enough. They finished fifth in the points table with 15 points, narrowly missing out on the playoffs.

So, where did it all go wrong for PBKS in IPL 2026? Here’s a breakdown.

The Bowling Meltdown

First and foremost, the bowling attack. It completely fell apart when it mattered most.

During the entire tournament, PBKS bowlers simply could not stop the leaking of runs.

Big names like Arshdeep Singh, Marco Jansen, Lockie Ferguson and Xavier Bartlett became targets for opposition batters. They consistently leaked runs at an economy rate of over 10.

Whether it was controlling the game in the middle overs or defending totals at the death, the bowling unit lacked a clear plan and execution.

Top-Order Collapse

Then came the sudden, unexpected failure of the top order.

In the initial weeks, the batting unit looked in fine form. Prabhsimran Singh, Priyansh Arya, Cooper Connolly and skipper Shreyas Iyer were giving the team flying starts.

But as the tournament progressed, their dominance vanished.

The top order suffered consecutive collapses in the second half. That meant the middle and lower order had too much heavy lifting to do.

Without those explosive starts, setting or chasing big totals became impossible.

Psychological Collapse

Another massive issue was the team’s inability to handle pressure and maintain momentum.

After that first loss to Rajasthan Royals, panic seemed to set in across the dugout.

Instead of treating it as a minor speed bump, the team completely lost its rhythm. The confidence evaporated, the body language dropped and they simply forgot how to win.

Losing six games in a row after winning six in a row is a psychological collapse that is hard to justify.

Poor Fielding Standards

Finally, you cannot win a tournament like the IPL if you don’t take your catches.

Punjab’s fielding standards this season were pretty poor. In fact, they registered one of the worst catch efficiency in the season at around 71%, dropping 16 out of 56 chances.

Shashank Singh, in particular, found himself under the scanner with so many dropped chances.

These costly errors left coach Ricky Ponting absolutely frustrated in the dugout.

Conclusion

In the end, Punjab Kings only have themselves to blame. They had the talent, the momentum and the playoffs right in their grasp.

But a mix of careless fielding, an inconsistent bowling lineup and a sudden batting slump cost them dearly. And now their painful wait for the IPL trophy continues.
